Dear Members

The Committee wish to remind all allotment gardeners of the potential nuisance which may be caused by the lighting of bonfires on allotment gardens and the problems that can be caused by smoke emanating from the fire.

Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 where a Local Authority is satisfied that smoke prejudicial to health or a nuisance exists or is likely to occur, they may serve Notice requiring the abatement of the nuisance or prohibiting/restricting occurrence or recurrence.

The penalty for contravention is a fine of up to £2000.

We are confident that most allotment holders are responsible and thoughtful in this respect, and simply ask you to examine the manner in which you have your bonfires and to ensure any occasional helpers are reminded of the need to observe common sense and respect for the comfort of the residents in the surrounding areas.

The Committee have produced Guidelines on the lighting of bonfires which we ask all members to adhere to (see link on left-hand side menu).

Most importantly please remember you must notify the Committee if you intend to light a bonfire.

We will take action against any member ignoring this request.

We thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Yours sincerely

SALGS Committee
